SPOKE’s art-based, workforce development & employment program for Boston public school youth and young adults, prepares them to be actively involved in their own learning. discover voice, community, innovation, advocacy, creative problem solving, emotional intelligence, leadership, and passion. YOUTHspeak fosters positive applied academic attitudes, skills, & behaviors in a setting of belonging.
Leadership
Through a partnership between SPOKE and the Boston Housing Authority (BHA), 20 YOUTHspeak participants discovered untapped qualities that propelled them to become the first Leadership Council to represent and give voice to young people living in Boston public housing.
From attending Resident Advisory Board meetings to creating art for and with youth and elders at BHA sites throughout Boston, and becoming peer teachers of a health curriculum through training by the Boston Public Health Commission, the individuals on the Leadership Council have grown into a force for advocacy and community.
Leadership in action. 1. Giving a tour of youth work at SPOKE Gallery. 2. Working intergenerationally, creating hand castings. 3. Fashioning ribbon for WORLD AIDS Day.
